Oxford is a city of dreamy spires, winding streets, incredible architecture and history. From the iconic University of Oxford (the oldest in the English-speaking world!), the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library, and the ancient churches, to name just a few of its many impressive landmarks, Oxford is full of culture and appeal. But, being a university city, you’ll also find lots of lively drinking holes, art galleries, theatres, and shops to explore during your first date.
Christchurch Meadows is a great place for a stroll on a first date. With stunning views of Oxford’s Magdalen College tower and the River Thames, you’ll enjoy a lovely walk along the riverbank and relax in the grass. The University Parks are also worth a visit; with sprawling lawns and formal gardens, it’s the perfect place to chat and get to know each other. There are also a number of gardens and parks, such as South Park and Port Meadow, that make for wonderful first date locations.
No first date is complete without a coffee date! There are plenty of coffee shops dotted throughout the city, each with its own unique atmosphere. You could try a cosy cafe like the Turf Café, with its cute garden, or the Petit Miracles, which serves up delicious drinks with a side of live music. For something a bit different, why not head over to the G &D Café and see if you can find some vintage treasures while sipping your coffee.
If you’re looking for more than just a cup of coffee, Oxford has plenty of galleries, museums and exhibitions to explore. The Ashmolean Museum offers a wonderful insight into the city’s history, while the Oxford University Museum of Natural History takes you on a journey through the world of plants and animals. The Pitt Rivers Museum is also very popular, with its quirky and interesting collection of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts. If modern art is more your thing, then you can visit the Modern Art Oxford gallery for a spot of contemporary culture.
Oxford is well known for its lively music scene and there are plenty of venues and clubs to choose from. The Cellar is one of the best spots to catch live music, while The Bullingdon works its magic with its eclectic line-up of local and international DJs. To take things outside, the Oxford Buskers festival is held in June each year, with buskers from around the world coming together to entertain the crowds.
Oxford has plenty of great pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. The Bear Inn is a popular spot for drinks and meals, while The Old Bookbinders Ale House has an extensive selection of local ales and traditional British pub food. If you want something more romantic, you could try the Turl Street Kitchen, a Turkish restaurant that serves up delicious Mediterranean-style dishes.
If none of the above take your fancy, you could always take your date to one of Oxford’s many theatres or cinemas. The Oxford Playhouse regularly showcases popular West End shows, while the Ultimate Picture Palace screens classic movies. Or why not join one of the many walking tours that explore the city’s rich history, beauty and culture? And for something completely different, you could venture out of town and try punting along the River Cherwell.
